Caroni is one of the great lost names of Caribbean rum, formerly produced at the state-owned Caroni Distillery in Trinidad. Established in 1923, the distillery became an important supplier of heavy Trinidad rum, including styles used in naval and blending traditions, before closing in 2002 as Trinidad's sugar industry was restructured.
After closure, remaining stocks began to acquire near-mythic status, particularly through bottlings selected and released by Velier, whose Caroni releases helped turn the distillery into a cult name among serious rum drinkers. With the distillery dismantled and casks steadily diminishing, Caroni is now a finite category: every genuine bottling comes from old stocks laid down before production ended.
Caroni's style is famously heavy, oily and intense, often showing notes of tar, diesel, molasses, dark fruit, tobacco, leather, spice, charred oak and tropical heat. Older cask-strength releases can be especially powerful, combining industrial depth with surprising balance, sweetness and aromatic complexity.
Caroni is not a gentle introduction to rum, nor a brand built for easy mixing. It is a closed-distillery legend whose surviving bottles capture a distinctive Trinidad style that can no longer be made in the same place, making it one of the most collectible and characterful names in modern rum.
