Nikka Taketsuru is a Japanese pure malt whisky named after Masataka Taketsuru, the Scottish-trained founder of Nikka and one of the key figures in Japanese whisky's development. It combines malt whiskies from Nikka's Yoichi and Miyagikyo distilleries, marrying Yoichi's firmer, lightly smoky coastal character with the softer fruit and elegance that Miyagikyo is known for.
The current Taketsuru Pure Malt is a no-age-statement expression, following the discontinuation of the previous aged releases as Japanese whisky demand put pressure on mature stocks. Rather than positioning itself as a single malt, it's a blended malt built around balance, texture and harmony, reflecting Nikka's longstanding focus on blending as a craft in its own right.
In style, Taketsuru is composed and gently complex, offering orchard fruit, malt sweetness, vanilla, spice and a subtle thread of smoke. It's an approachable yet serious whisky: refined enough for those new to Japanese whisky, yet layered enough to demonstrate the quiet precision and restraint that characterise Nikka at its finest.
