Fettercairn is a Highland single malt distillery in the village of the same name, set in the Howe of Mearns beneath the foothills of the Grampian mountains. Founded in 1824 by Sir Alexander Ramsay, it has a long history shaped by both estate ownership and blending demand, while its arch and unicorn emblems remain closely tied to the distillery's identity.
Today Fettercairn is operated by Whyte & Mackay, under the wider ownership of Alliance Global. Although much of its spirit has historically supported blends, the distillery has developed a clearer single malt presence since its range was relaunched, with age-stated expressions such as the 12, 18, 22 and 28 Year Old, alongside annual 16 Year Old releases, Warehouse Collection bottlings and older limited editions.
A defining feature of Fettercairn's production is its copper cooling ring, which runs water down the outside of the spirit stills to encourage reflux and help create a lighter, fruitier spirit. The resulting whisky is often bright and tropical in character, showing pineapple, mango, citrus, vanilla, soft spice, honey and gentle oak, with older expressions developing richer layers of dried fruit, polished wood and warming complexity.
Fettercairn has become increasingly interesting as a single malt because it offers a Highland profile that feels distinctive rather than generic. Its combination of unusual production technique, tropical fruit character and renewed focus gives the distillery a clearer voice than it enjoyed for much of its quieter blending-led history.
