Takamaka is the leading rum brand of the Seychelles, produced on Mahé at La Plaine St André, a historic estate on the island's south-eastern coast. The distillery was founded in 2002 by brothers Richard and Bernard d'Offay, creating a modern Seychellois rum house with a strong sense of island identity.
The brand is made by Trois Frères Distillery and draws on both local and international rum-making influences. Its range includes lighter mixing rums, spiced and flavoured expressions, overproof bottlings and more serious aged releases, with series such as St André and Le Clos exploring cask strength, limited batches and more distinctive maturation styles.
Takamaka's style varies across the range, but the core character is generous, tropical and approachable. Expect notes of vanilla, caramel, spice, coconut, citrus and soft molasses in the more accessible bottlings, while older or limited releases can add dried fruit, oak, tobacco, darker sugar and richer cask depth.
Takamaka has helped put Seychelles rum on the international map. It is not a centuries-old Caribbean estate brand, but a confident modern producer from a distinctive island setting, offering everything from easy-going spiced rum to more characterful bottlings for drinkers looking beyond the usual rum regions.
