Pittyvaich was a short-lived Speyside single malt distillery in Dufftown, built by Arthur Bell & Sons in 1975. Created to support the rising demand for Bell's blended Scotch, it stood close to Dufftown Distillery and was designed as a practical production site rather than a traditional, visitor-led malt whisky name.
The distillery's working life was unusually brief. Pittyvaich closed in 1993, less than twenty years after production began, and the buildings were demolished in 2002. Its remaining stocks now sit within Diageo's inherited portfolio, with official releases having included a 12 Year Old in the Flora & Fauna range and later appearances in the Diageo Special Releases series.
As a whisky, Pittyvaich is generally light, fruity and gently malty, with notes of apple, pear, citrus, vanilla, honey, cereal and soft spice. Older bottlings can develop more texture and polish, bringing orchard fruit, wax, toasted oak and a delicate sweetness, while sherry casks add richer dried fruit and spice.
Pittyvaich is now valued partly because it disappeared before it had time to build a large single malt following. Its surviving bottlings capture a modern Speyside distillery that was created for blending, closed young, and only really found its audience after production had ended.
