Speyside is now recognised not merely as a sub-region of the Highlands in a casual sense, but as one of the five official Scotch whisky regions. Its dense concentration of distilleries and its long association with elegant, lightly peated or unpeated, fruity styles have made it the best-known heartland of single malt Scotch for many drinkers around the world. This sweet, estery style rose to prominence in the nineteenth century and still forms much of the public image of single malt Scotch today.

Glenfiddich remains one of the defining names of Speyside and a giant of the single malt category, but the old claim that it accounts for approximately 30% of worldwide single malt sales is better avoided unless tied to a specific historic source. What can safely be said is that Glenfiddich is the world's leading single malt Scotch whisky and that Speyside malts continue to make up a substantial part of the malt content used in many blends, as well as dominating the single malt discussion more broadly.

Alongside the honeyed, fruity and elegant whiskies for which the region is best known, Speyside is also home to distilleries associated with a richer and heavier style, often shaped by maturation in active sherry-seasoned oak. Classically sherried whiskies such as Macallan or Glenfarclas remain among the region's most celebrated expressions, though it's worth remembering that many Speyside distilleries have at one time or another produced excellent sherry-matured bottlings. Just as importantly, many of the region's distilleries produce spirit that matures with remarkable grace, yielding old whiskies of great complexity and refinement.
